Halloween Costume: Ladybug Girl

Jenna has been loving the Ladybug Girl books by David Soman and Jacky Davis, especially the scenes where Lulu plays dress-up. While she’s too young to grasp the concept of ‘being something’ for Halloween, she’s not too young to enforce strict preferences about what she will and won’t wear. Since tutus are currently on the approved list (and hopefully will remain there through the end of the month), we decided to dress her up as Lulu the Ladybug Girl this year.

While I could have purchased a ladybug costume here, I decided to remain true to the simplicity of Lulu’s look (and try to keep it more budget-friendly). Here’s what I came up with:

  1. Very full red tutu found on eBay ($9 including shipping)
  2. Long-sleeve red Cherokee t-shirt ($4 on sale, Target)
  3. Red slipper boots ($10, Lands End with free shipping). I initially planned on buying these ladybug rainboots at Target, but decided she would be more likely to wear the slippers. I’ll attach black felt dots to complete the look.
  4. Ladybug wings and antennae ($9, amazon.com with free shipping)

    • Yes, the tutu is very full and the wings will definitely fit. My daughter is 4-yrs old now and she still wears them occasionally.
