It’s been hard keeping up with the preschool activity schedule this summer. Splash day, letter day, hat day, rock star day – each day of school has a theme and a corresponding list of action items to complete the night before and bag of stuff to remember in the morning. Am I the only parent to bring their kids to school dressed in swimsuits and slathered in sunscreen on a non-swim day? Maybe so.
This week we returned from our mini-vacation to a school week that included hat day, letter day AND favorite book character day. Today is favorite book character day, and, I’ll be the first to admit, I was definitely looking for an easy way out. Luckily for me, Jenna LOVES wearing last year’s Halloween costume, which is based on the book series, Ladybug Girl. Done. But Jason? I don’t think he has a favorite character that isn’t actually from a Disney movie, rather than a piece of literature. In looking through his books, however, I spotted one of his favorites – The Sneetches – and immediately found my easy way out: attaching a star to a t-shirt. But after making his t-shirt I started to question whether it would be recognizable and whether he would answer the question “and what character are you?” with anything other than Buzz Lightyear, Zurg or his recent favorite alter ego, “Lego Jason.” So to complete the ensemble, I printed a quote from the book onto iron-on paper and attached it to the back of his star t-shirt. Now, hopefully, no one will even ask.
