A Back-to-School DIY and A Few Favorites

Anyone else planning some back-to-school shopping this weekend? I’m eager to get started, but also telling myself that I should wait until the tax-free weekend that starts on the 17th. Since the start of the school season is foremost on my mind, I thought I would also share a quick DIY for the composition notebooks you’re likely to have in your cart at Target this weekend.

The Materials

The Process

And speaking of back-to-school, here are a few of my favorite links from the week:

Happy Weekend!

  1. What a cute idea!

I avoid tax-free weekends like the plague – the few $ I will save (less than $4 on $50 worth of back-to-school supplies), are not worth fighting the crowds. My time (and sanity!) is worth more than what I will save.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    • Oh my, I didn’t even think about the crowds. I’m obviously new at this. I’ll definitely get it out of the way this weekend. Thanks!
      Have a great weekend too!

    • Ours are definitely getting a bit smudged. I think this is best for doodling and decorating more so than creating a permanent label.

      • If you don’t want it to rub off, I think you might be able to softly paint over it with modge podge or something like that…It makes sense in my head, has anyone ever tried something like that before?

    • Not yet, but it’s only been about a week since I painted them and we are using them at home – haven’t started carrying them around at school yet. I was more worried that the cover would absorb the paint and start to deteriorate/get flimsy, but the paint dries so quickly that didn’t have a chance to happen.

  2. My daughter saw this and really wants to do some fro her and her friends plus, she wants to use those neat colorful new duct tape designs for the spine.

  4. Just an idea to save more $$, make ur own chalkboard paint!! Then you can have bright colors too and not just boring old black. IF u google DIY chalkboard paint you’ll find tutorials on other blog spots 🙂 Very simple to make, regular paint and non-sanded tile grout! Or like someone else mentioned. The chalkboard vinyl would be a good idea too, at least you wouldn’t have to worry about it deteriorating the cover (it’s just like a sticker!) http://www.wordplaydesigns.net is another place u can purchase it from!

  6. does it rub off? i would love to do this but when i carry it around school i don’t want to get chalk all over my stuff

    • The chalk is smudging but not rubbing off. Someone suggested hairspray – not sure if that would work but it might be worth a try. I haven’t had any problem with the paint coming off.

  10. You can also cover these journals with scrapbook papers and use the cool duct tape for the spine. I have been doing this for a long time and coordinating them with the subject inside…. recipes, vacations etc. Takes about 10 minutes to do a notebook. You can either cut paper same size or overlap the edges.
